"THE GIRL BOX"
What is the "Girl Box"?
The "Girl Box" is a place where girls are valued more for their outward appearance than their character inside. This often results in low self-esteem and a distorted body image which can lead to substance abuse, eating disorders, teen pregnancy and poor nutrition.

Who gets trapped in "The Box"?
We all do at times! But Girls on the Run focuses on educating third through eigth grade girls on developing a healthy self-image and providing a safe space where girls can say, "I belong just the way I am."

How does Girls on the Run work?

Girls on the Run combines training for a 5K event with lessons designed to enhance the social, mental, physical, and emotional health of pre-teen girls.

CURRICULUM
Girls on the Run is a 10 week program consisting of 20 one hour and fifteen minute lessons administered by certified coaches with CPR and First Aid training. All of our volunteers undergo a volunteer police check.

Every lesson focuses on a specific issue-related topic and follows a five-part format:

Introduction: As the girls arrive and
settle into a circle, the coach greets the
girls and settles in for a short discussion
on the "topic" of the day.

Getting on Board Activity: The
Getting on Board activity is a game
that introduces the day’s topic and
helps to focus the group.

The Warm Up: The warm-up is a
brief activity or game that energizes the girls and warms up their muscles. The Warm Up activity is usually a short
active game that incorporates the lesson topic for that day. After the warm-up
the coach leads a stretching session
and discussion to process the
information from the warm-up.

The Workout: Each session incorporates interactive uplifting games developed to teach the girls a specific life lesson while training them to run or walk a 5K in the final week. The workout involves running laps while participating in a game and collecting "lap markers".

Wrap It Up: Each session ends with a
cool down and stretch. The coach
leads the girls in processing the lesson
and the participants leave with positive reinforcement from the coach, and a
group cheer.

COMMUNITY
The Girls on the Run® Simcoe County curriculum discusses "finding my place and my voice in the community." This portion of the curriculum involves a community project. The girls choose and conduct a community service project in order to put their new skills to use.
